Prespes Lakes annual festival, in memory of Melina Mercouri, to run August 23-24

“Prespes 2013″, the area’s 25th consecutive festival, will take place in the city of Florina and on the small island of Aghios Achillios, in the middle of the Lesser Prespa Lake. The area, taking its name after the two Prespa lakes on the borders with FYRoM and Albania, is three hours

west of the city of Thessaloniki.

Organisers said that a show on Mercouri, produced jointly with the Melina Mercouri Foundation, will hold its premiere on August 24 at the Aghios Achillios basilica before being performed at the Herod Atticus Theatre (Irodio) in Athens on September 7. Maria Nafpliotou and Yiannis Stankoglou will hold the main roles.

“Melina Mercouri had a magical touch and tranformed everything. She is like a newly-minted coin, [only] once the coin was released, the mint shut down,” said the festival’s artistic director Giorgos Lianis.

Chryssa Manti, president of the Cultural Events Organisation for Prespes and Florina, and Western Macedonia regional director Georgios Dakis also made statements about the importance of the Prespes annual events.
The festival is expected to cost less than 140,000, while entrance will be free to the public.
